    morganbr

I am an MSIV AROTC at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. I am scheduled to commission in May. I found out about AIFA while searching for information on attaining Active Duty status. Unfortunately, due to a low GPA the first 3 years of college, prior to ROTC, an average PT score and an average camp performance, I was accessed Reserve Duty. Now, I am seeking any way that I can switch to Active Duty.

I KNEW THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER TO VIE FOR THE CROWN!! JUST LIKE THE HIGHLANDER, THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!!!! I WILL LOP YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF!!111

But after you're done getting drunk and breaking things because you're pissed off that you need to find a full time job, hit me up. Same thing happened to me. And one day, you too can make O-3 20 months behind your peers.

This my friend is why we have OCS. No Camp, No assessments, no long term evaluations just a guy with a degree and scared of finding a real job.

But at the end of the day you still went through OCS which was nothing more than a right of passage. Congrats. We now have the same title and paycheck... I just slacked all the way to get mine.

Dude, if you can swing an AGR slot that's the best thing going. It even has active fucks such as myself drooling for one! lol

Welcome! Good to have another ND native around here. My lil brother graduated from there in Dec.

As far as switching to AD- I've got nothing for you but wish you the best of luck.

I spoke with one of my LT buddies who was reserve and switched to active. He said he had to sign and process a DD 368 and it took a while but he was successful. I'm sure

    Re: morganbr

Yes, a DD 368 needs to be filled out. But it's not just him who needs to sign it. Whomever the release approval authority is also needs to approve it. In the guard, most likely that's the TAG.

Bottom line, if you really want to go active you need to make your intentions known immediately. Talk to your ROTC cadre. Depending on the needs of the Army, things can change and they might be able to send a request up the channels. I would find out what unit you're going to and start drilling with them. Introduce yourself to the company/battalion commander. Let them know that you'd like to go active. I'd highly suggest phrasing it something like "Although I don't have much experience in the Reserve component, I feel that active duty is a better fit for me." Don't whine and tell them "Oh I got screwed". That will just fall on deaf ears and piss them off.

See how great things are around here for folks that post an intro before spouting off?
Way to be, new guy, good job. And welcome to AIFA!
Associate's right, and he's experienced in these matters. Your cadre ought to be able to guide you through what needs to be done, but if you have any hang-ups along the way, we'll be more than happy to help as best we can.

    Re: morganbr

Thanks for all the responses. I did go through the ROTC CoC, sent in a 4187 requesting a component change. According to Cadet Command, their goal this year is 100% Reserve manning, so even though there are AD slots, they won't move me. It's overly frustrating because I missed the cutoff by 9 individuals, if only I had gotten an A in college algebra instead of an A-. Ha.

I took a vacancy hold in the Reserve when I found out I wasn't accessed Active, so I wouldn't be branched by needs of the Reserve. However, I called the unit to speak with my commander, whom is only part time. I was given his phone number by the AGR NCO, which I called and left a detailed, polite message on. One month later, I emailed him a formal introductory letter, which he hasn't responded to, and it's been over 2 months.

Optimistically, I spoke with an AMEDD recruiter who said that the day I commission and am released from CC, I can initiate a DD 368 to go Active, which he claims they won't turn down, of course he doesn't KNOW this. Does anyone know how realistic it is to have this done? Should I continue to try to contact my detachment commander? I'm triple slotted in a 70B XO position at a medical detachment.

    Thanks!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It really doesn't matter what any of us here think your chances are. If you want to go Active, take the necessary steps to get there. & best of luck.

P.S. & be nice to Assoc. He's your "ace up the sleeve" in regards to your predicament here on AIFA.

... but not too nice. I mean- if you discuss it over dinner that's okay. But watch your food/drink to make sure he doesn't slip you anything and if he "forgot some paperwork" in his house/bedroom just tell him you'll get it tomorrow .

As you can see, KN doesn't make the same mistake twice.

Realistic? It might be. But recruiters say that shit all the time. But he/she isn't the one who needs to approve it.

I'd give one more phone call to the detachment commander. If the detachment is part of a Company- then try the Company Commander. If the detachment reports directly to a BN, then give the BN commander a call.

Being that you're triple slotted, I'm gonna go ahead and say that it'll be difficult for you to get a platoon. You might want to find another unit/call a Guard recruiter.

    Re: morganbr

I had a hell of a time even getting any contact info for my unit. I spent a week trying to get someone on the phone. The only number I was provided was for the Regional Readiness Command, so I went through the operator, and after a week of attempts, I spoke with an NCO at my unit. I tried contacting her again a few weeks ago, to no avail. I imagine the Detachment reports to a Battalion, as the commander is a Major, but I don't know much about detachment organization.

I'll keep trying to contact either the commander or the AGR NCO I spoke with before. The ROTC Cadre told me not to tell the Detachment Commander that I intend to transfer to Active Duty, as it will annoy him. But I don't see how not telling him that could be a good idea if that is my ultimate goal.

The only other possibility I have is that the LTC at my ROTC Battalion is trying to secure me an AGR slot through Brigade. Of course, as far as I have heard, it's pretty much impossible for a 2LT, especially since I'm not eligible until after BOLC. But he put in a request with the USAR guy at Brigade regardless. We'll see if anything becomes of that at all.

Would it help if I contacted someone in the Reserve and requested to deploy ASAP? I want to deploy as soon as I can anyway, and I've been told that when its time to come back, it's possible to request to stay with the unit. Any thoughts on that? Can I even volunteer to deploy?

Thanks so much for all the advice. I'll keep pushing the issue on all fronts.

    Re: morganbr

Ridiculously enough, this year is the worst year ever. They cut AD slots, took away the ADOS-RC program, cut the budget for GBR AND with the removal of BOLC II, there will be a backlog of new LTs all hungry for any gold bar slots we get. They gave our only gold bar slot this year to a guy from UND, not the one guy left waiting for BOLC, in town, without a job, from our school. Meh.

Does anyone know about the AMEDD direct commission boards? I talked to my Reserve branch manager and apparently I can be released if I get a direct appointment.

I saw that the other day, but it also says only LTs who are IRR, and I'm required to remain TPU. Also, it says no AMEDD officers. Which I think I'm considered AMEDD as an medical service officer?

Where's ANB when you need him?

Can KN shed any light here as well?

No light to shed, no glimmer of knowledge on this stuff. I'm out of that particular loop right now. Sorry.
