Heres what floated into my inbox today

2. ROTC/USMA/OCS/JROTC cadets will wear the enlisted garrison cap while in BOLC I, at commissioning they will wear the beret. (This means the officer garrison cap will no longer required.)

All - would strongly recommend you inform your PMSs that a uniform change may be imminent. Note below states that: "ROTC/USMA/OCS/JROTC cadets will wear the enlisted garrison cap while in BOLC I, at commissioning they will wear the beret. (This means the officer garrison cap will no longer required.)" I know that MS IVs are either in the process of buying or have completed the purchase of their uniforms for commissioning. Would recommend you instruct those that have not procured headgear not to purchase the officer garrison cap. The leadership understands the implications of this decision and is working to get speedy resolution. More to follow.

I don't know if this has any implications to any of you besides McCombs18 and myself... but i'll put more up as it comes over the wire.

Where did this come from? From my understanding, the rule of no-beret until branch qualified still applies. That rule never made any sense, but is still the rule as far as I know.

The below Beret information was an early alert to prevent upcoming commissioning MS IV from purchasing a clothing item that is no longer required. Since the MS IV cadets are not authorized nor been issued the Beret during their ROTC training, they will not be furnished a Beret from the ROTC stock, therefore they must purchase the Beret at their expense.

The RPA items listed in CTA 50-900 (Table 1 and 2) that can be purchased by MS IV within 90 days before graduations are listed below for your information:

Coat, Mens/Womans AG 1 each
Coat, Mens/Womans All Weather 1 each
Coat, CAMO 2 each
Coat, Cold Weather CAMO 1 each
Shirt, Mens AG LS 1 each
Shirt, Mens AG SS 1 each
Shirt, Womans tuck-in, AG LS 1 each
Shirt, Womans tuck-in, AG SS each
Skirt, Womans AG 1 each
Slacks, Womans AG 1 each
Trousers, Mens AG 1 each
Trousers, CAMO 2 each

I think there was some confusion along the lines of what cadets should buy. Some cadets are buying this, some are buying that - and the guidance I'm getting makes it seem like the issue was more with MS IV's buying the wrong uniforms... More to follow...

Here's the update:

Subject: WARNING ORDER: New Guidance on Wear of Army Black Beret
Importance: High

Commanders,

1. HQDA is expected to announce that effective 3 May 2004 the black beret with flash is authorized in the FY 04 Active Army male and female clothing bags. This note serves as warning order and provides initial guidance. Formal guidance will be published in the very near future.

2. Every Soldier will be authorized 2 berets. The garrison cap for males and females will be removed from the clothing bag. Berets will be issued to enlisted Soldiers (Active Army, USAR and ARNG) during Initial Entry Training from the Clothing Initial Issue Points during the Phase II issue.

3. The proper wear of the beret will be trained along with the class A
uniform. Soldiers will be authorized to wear the beret during the
inspection Period 4, and then permanently beginning with Family Day Activities immediately prior to graduation.

4. Soldiers in training at AIT will be issued their berets from CIF
stocks NLT 1 Jun 04. Schools must identify beret requirements and
coordinate issue with their supporting CIF. If additional berets are required to meet AIT requirements notify TRADOC DCSPIL Logistics/G4, Ms.

Shands (DSN 680-5145) by 30 Apr 04 with your requirement.

5. Formal donning ceremonies will be determined by the unit commander.

6. Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI)/unit crest will not be worn until Soldier arrives at his/her 1st unit of assignment.

7. ROTC/USMA/OCS cadets are authorized to wear the black beret upon commissioning. Officers will purchase the black beret from the Army Military Clothing Sales Stores (AMCSS).

8. The garrison cap will continue to be used by SROTC/JROTC cadets
only.

9. Implementation date of the new beret guidance will be no earlier than 3 May and no later than 1 Jun 04.

10. TRADOC Reg 350-6 will be updated to reflect the new beret guidance.

The whole idea of continuing to wear the garrison cap made absolutely no sense in the first place. Newly commissioned officers had to purchase a uniform article just to wear it perhaps 2 or 3 times. The Army finally unscrewed its head from its ass. My theory is that they wanted to sell all the garrison caps still in stock to ensure no money loss, all at the officers' expense.

That's discussion is over done and burnt, no point and bringing up some more. BTW, we are now wearing berets here at AVOBC.

Sorry to bring up an old subject, but I think the tan berets for Rangers are cooler looking than the black berets. Sure, there's the whole "tradition" thing, but that picture of Pat Tillman with his DCUs and his tan beret is pretty badass.

Sammy Sandbag

Armor wore black berets way before the Rangers did, so that whole tradition argument is pretty null n' void.

You already no you're a badass, if you know you are, why show it off?? Yeah I mean they can be cool...but the whol GD army?? Jesus...well, someone did the research and found it'd make us look more European and "elite"...did you know in Europe there are over 22 different berets to signify different units? Just FYI...someone check me on that, I'm pretty sure but not entirely.

Comissioning in berets I think makes more sense though...saves money, looks good I guess...I don't know I'm not army, I'm in Navy/Marine Option so I don't really give a shit about berets.

My dyke gets one, he looks super-hooah.

As far as that goes, I guess you did, but I still hate it. The idea of everyone wearing a beret still make me sick to my stomach on many levels.

The Army looks like a damned JROTC drill meet these days...
