Good on 'em. The first tour was more than enough, the second was above and beyond. Time for some 'him' time.

I'd probably re-enlist. He'll never have to spend a day in Combat again. if I was him, I'd get assigned to an ROTC Battalion and milk the Army for my Degree. After that, I'd stay in ROTC and milk the Army to get my Masters. Under Gread Degree in something like engineering or business. Master's degree in Business or something tech related. THEN I'd get out ;-)

The new GI bill itself is lucrative. Besides, who knows if he likes this new gig he has going on or not. Might not be his cup of tea to be doing all that he's doing.

I'm sure he'll have plenty of employment opportunities.

I think leaving the Army presents him with a lot more oppertunities financially. Now he start charging hefty fees for speaking engagements, probably get a good book deal and sell movie rights- (I am not suggesting that he would be one to exploit what happened for financial gain, but just indicating how he can achieve a far greater level of financial stability than staying as a NCO). plus he can also go back to Active Duty later if he wanted, isnt the only other MOH winner on AD a COL who was at Walter Reed? he also took a huge break- in service (was prior enlisted in Vietnam). Also , now he can actually become a bit more unhinged in terms of sharing his opinion about the war and politics in general. Given the Media attention and without the constraints of the Army, he will probably become the most influential voice amongst young Veterans of OIF/OEF.

You're absolutely right. He comes across as rather articulate. If I was him, I'd find the best college I could get into and get a degree there. He'd make an outstanding professor. Just needs to get 6 years of education.

Well it's also got to be overwhelming to constantly be followed by the media, to not be allowed to have bad days, constantly in the spotlight, strangers always wanting to come up to you and talk with you/shake your hand- could be overwhelming. When his name is taken off his chest it may be easier to blend in among several thousand other students. Just be called by his first name. Might be worth it. :)

WhatI wonder if he would feel awkward sitting class listening to hippies rant about their hippy views or Middle East teachers teaching their anti Army views? Regardless a good old Iowa boy like him will make a great addition to The U of Northern Iowa! UNI FIGHT UNI FIGHT!

Scratch that, I'd go wherever I can get the best education with the best scholarship. Then transfer the GI Bill to his wife since his kids will likely get free college too

Isnt there a law that allows his children a guaranteed amission to West Point? Also in regards to dealing with stupid people at College, I think after some of the dumb and repetive questions he has been asked in the many national interviews he has done, especially with David Letterman, he will be more than ready for that.

Good for him. I just wonder what kind of crazy deals the army tried to use to keep him in.
