Interesting. Can't say I like the idea, but honestly how different is this than what we are already doing. But I'd have to disagree that simple permanent air bases would do anything to stop the country from falling back into the hands of terrorists / Taliban.

And 50 years from now, It'll be like Korea where some talking head wants more accompanied tours to Afghanistan. I guess we could only hope that Afghanistan would even resemble S. Korea a little over the next 50 years.

With any hope. But how many Soldiers back in the 50's thought SK would be where it is today after having to push the north from damn near Pusan to the 38th? We could be amazed... But then again I think Sammy was right on the money.

Big difference between the ROK and Afghanistan. There was no insurgency in SK, the people (for the most part) depended on us, knew why we were there, supported us, and fought hard along-side us in the cause. I don't believe Afghanistan will ever be like that, Iraq either.

All I'm saying is that we don't know what's in store 50 years from now. You make some good points and all of that makes sense... SK wasn't exactly a 3rd world nation. So who knows? I'd like to see us leave those shit holes, war is tiring, but then again I don't know enough about Afghanistan to have much of an opinion. We brought Iraq around pretty good, not perfect, but decent.

You're exactly right Sammy. The Afghans are by far the laziest people I've ever met. Iraqis eventually got sick of the violence and fought back. Afghans won't do that because they're uneducated, corrupt, lazy people. My personal opinion is that building a permamnt base here serves no task/purpose. Until the people decide that they're sick of getting murdered in the streets by the Taliban for exercising basic freedoms, there will be little change. IMHO

I agree with Sammy. There is a very defined line in Korea. We would probably have slightly more success by having permanent bases in Kuwait and Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan. When I was in Iraq in 07-08, my 1SG predicted we would eventually have something permanent like Korea. Maybe a small show of force would help, or maybe not. Only time would tell anyways.
Stay in A-stan? WHY?!! There is NOTHING worthwhile in that entire country. NOTHING. (Ok, well we did bury a piece of the WTC there, but we'll drop the first nuke on that spot to just make a point.)
Kuwait? Qatar? Bahrain? Sure. PCS spots. Not a problem. We're still in the AO if someone needs a boot up their ass. Fucking Afghanistan? Fuck that noise.
