Something I've always been curious about is the use of non-issue weapons by US forces. Granted special forces are an exception I've seen a lot of pictures of non spec guys walking around with odd weaponry. Whats the range of equipment they can requisition, bring or use after taking it off the enemy?

You personally can not take weapons off enemy as "War Trophies." Units will take weapons and items of historical value, most glass cases in unit HQ have items from past conflicts. Of course, in the shit, if need be you are more than welcome to use any weapon within your grasp.

The rules and regualtions are covered in AR 608-4:

My cousin (Armor in Gulf War) told me stories of guys sneaking in their own personal weapons, like desert eagles or glocks or whatever. Don't know anything about rifles or other weapons, tho.

maybe you're seeing pix of designated marksmen. I've seen photos of them carrying M14s, specialty AR-15 type rifles with all sorts of cool bipods and scopes and whatnot.
But seems like M68 reflex optics and PAC-4s on flattop M4s and M16A4s is getting pretty mainstream now... hehe.... yay for rapid fielding initiative.
My bros a PFC w/ HHC 2-7IN, 3ID, (19D cav scout though), his scout platoon gets some really dope shit. Most of his buddy's m4s are tricked out w/ reflex optics, ir lasers, m203 grenade launchers, woohoo!!!

Yea, on big question was seeing guys with m14's. On the army.mil site there are some ADA guys standing on their rigs with tricked out 14's. My two biggest questions are how did/do they pull that stuff? and where does the line end? How far could you take this...I mean we're all going to be officers, and some of us are already, so why not get some sweet gear. Professionally, of course.

i know back in the days before platoon leader was closed, there was a thread about it and people said that if they tried to bring any personal firearms and were caught, they would be removed from them and not given back till they got back as well as face some kind of punishment but i dont remember what kind.
there were also stories of soldiers trying to stuff in every crevis of helicopters and humvees and anything else big enough to hide something but most of it got picked up by people whose job on the way out was to check for that kinda shit

The m14 you saw on pl.org was a sniper. Right now snipers often use the m14s as their main weapons...so do SEALs and most marine snipers.
