This probably won't apply to ROTC cadets eh?
hrmmmz, I'm proud of our nation's colors, but it ain't exactly the most tactically sound addition to the utility uniform...

Subdued flags and those in other colors are in violation of U.S. code, Morales said.
Why would they make the subdued flags in violation?

“The flag is worn on the right shoulder to give the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward,” Morales said.
Hmm... interesting. Haven't heard it in quite those words before.
This won't affect ROTC cadets to my knowledge, just as cadets don't wear the black beret. Frankly, though, I think this is about as dumb as the beret in some ways. While it's a pain in the ass to get your uniforms altered/unaltered/altered through multiple (and back-to-back, these days) deployments, I still think that it's worth the distinction of not having home-base soldiers wear the flag, just as specially trained (RANGER, SF) forces should have distinctive gear.
TG, to your point on subdued flags, they have never been authorized on the BDUs as far as deployment goes... it's always been full-color. Not that it makes much sense to be out in the woods with a brightly-colored patch on... but I think it has something to do with not changing the colors on the flag. Pros and cons, pros and cons.

AR 670-1 28-18. Wear of full-color U.S. flag cloth replica
b. Description. Chapter 1, Title 4 , United States Code, provides for the design of the U.S. flag and specifies the colors as red, white, and blue. Colors other than red, white, and blue violate the U.S. Code; therefore, subdued-colored flags are not authorized for wear. The size of the full-color cloth U.S. flag replica is approximately 2 inches by 3 inches.

I think it was with the reasoning that its now not a question of if you'll get deployed, just when.
After this year, I think at least a brigade from every single active division will have been in the centcom aor. Makes logistical sense in that aspect I suppose.

Yeah, I agree with you there. At the end of it all they probably would have spent more money on tailoring than I'd like to think about. ;)
Still, it also can't do much for morale in the short term, and it does kinda take away from the deployed troops, I think it's good to have something noticeable that says "I'm away from my home serving my country".
But, I'm not arguing very hard, b/c it's a technicality that really won't end/save any lives. So, let 'em do what they want.

They've already started this here at Rucker, but only for soldiers on perminent party. Students aren't required to wear them. So I've only seen a handful wearing them so far. In my personal opinion, I think it's a horrible waste of time and money. The BDUs just don't look right with a full colored flag with a yellow border sewn onto the right shoulder. It's self-defeating. The likely-hood of that flag being the defining symbol that prevents a friendly fire is slim to none. I fail to see how the pros out weigh the cons. Just sounds like another congressman's constituent needed a little help keeping his flag patch factory running.

We had a SPC on R&R leave from Iraq speak in our class yesterday and he had a subdued flag on his BDU's... Obviously the Army had to have authorized that, so why are they saying it isn't allowed?

They changed their minds on it once, but now all Active Duty Army soldier have the tactical flag on their arm. Another General wanted to make his mark on the Army, and decided to do it in the tradition of "the black berret" a stupid uniform change that is just a waste of time. The "US ARMY" tag tends to clue people in to what country we are from. Oh yeah, that and the CNN cameria crew

Wonder when/if that'll transfer to the Guard level of life...heck might be sooner than I'd expect.

from what i remember from the first gulf war, there was a lot of bitching on the media's part about a lack of access to the military. i guess the powers that be didnt want to hear any of that bitching all over again.

I say allow cameramen as long as they know what they're doing, and as long as they don't reveal anything. And ESPECIALLY if they don't get in the way. If they get in the way, shoot them.

What news agencies DO have to do is diversify their work force by getting more military vets in their payrolls. I hate it when a freaking journalist can't tell the difference between a battalion and brigade, or a captain from a corporal. jeez. Its gotta be like listening to jessica simpson sportscast the superbowl.
