After retreat you can also wear full size or mini medals as well....

Sammy Sandbag
15 November 2005, 19:36
Well that's also a mess dress kind of thing. You wear ribbons not medals on the blues. (IIRC)

set up for blues is the same as Class A (greens).

only exceptions are whether bowtie or cover (hat)

Sammy Sandbag
15 November 2005, 19:41
I was about to say, that's the easiest way to look at it.

Also, what's the reg for no cover? Is it after 18 or 1900? Something like that, I don't recall. Have yet to buy the hat.

Aries
15 November 2005, 19:42
retreat.

1700 I believe.

No reg on the cover. It is custom and tradition that will rule - - i.e. whatever the commander wants.

over 20 years, I wore my blues hat 3 times.

When assigned to a real unit, I'd wear my blues to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner; and most years for New Years Day reception at the CG's house. And there were a few dining ins throughout.

proud to say it still fit as well on the last day as the first year I got it.

Never got mess dress. Never needed. However, it you get to Korea, order a set there. It's much cheaper. (KN, you listening?)

Aries
15 November 2005, 19:49
shit.. Tiddle you paying attention?

PRM16Tiddle
15 November 2005, 19:52
yeah, I was gonna wait till korea but active duty HAD to get them here at OBC....which really pissed me off.

Sammy Sandbag
15 November 2005, 19:53
No, he's talking about picking up your mess dress in Korea. All officers have to have the dress blues.

PRM16Tiddle
15 November 2005, 19:54
oh....ok.

I274

sorry to hear that.

Mess dress is an optional uniform. Not required.

I've been to all sorts of ceremonies. Dress blues is acceptable EVERYWHERE they state "mess dress".

but my spouse is AMEDD too. And those suckers are stuck on being buttheads.
(no offense to you tiddle).

You might want to re-read AR670-1 para 20-10b(12). You can wear full size or miniature medals after retreat (and mini skill badges if you are wearing mini medals), when this uniform becomes equivelent to a tuxedo (ie with the bowtie). I will admit it is uncommon, but I've seen it done.

See !!

What did I say about the AMEDD??

(no offense ANB)

This is why I said it's a "mess dress kind of thing." ie Something more commonly associated with the mess dress, not dress blues. Damn you nurses, have to spell out everything. I'm with the infantry guy, shoot and move, screw the communicate part... ;-)

Yeah, got a nicely tailored mess dress in Osan for like $200 (including the material). Through AAFES it's like close to $500.

Couple of my buddies got the white mess uniform as well. If I ever get back to Korea, I'm picking me up one of those too...

BTW, if you are in Dress Blues before retreat during the duty week(and for you folks who still don't know what that means, it's while the flag is still up ;-) ), you are supposed to wear a cover when outside and the 4-in-hand tie, not the bowtie. However, outside of being in the Old Guard or in some ceremony, most folks will never wear a Dress Blue uniform during duty hours (unless you're in the Cav, and then they better not see you without your Stetson on.... :D )

There IS one reg about wearing cover in blues/ mess dress/ any other uni...

While under arms, cover WILL be worn.

Now, axe yerself. Ever see a color guard violate this reg? I have...numerous times.

I stand corrected. You are absolutely right.

and you know about the custom of taking off your cover when entering the bar... the CAV guys always made a show of it with their stetsons when they were "under arms" by wearing their sabres.

We had a rule in our O-club that if Cav guys pulled that, we wouldn't make them take their cover off. But if they ever removed their saber from their hip during the evening's festivities, they bought a round for the whole place.

armynurseboy
16 November 2005, 13:37
Meh...when we did our stable calls, we'd take our stetson's off only if the RCO or SCO did. COL Teeples loved wearing his....

Sabres on their hip or sabres on their collar....? ;-)
