Hi Everyone, I like the site. Hopefully someone can help me out.

I was in the AFROTC program but left because I didn’t find it challenged me in the areas I was looking for. I am now considering Army ROTC. When I attend college next year I will be a junior so I must go to the Leaders Training Course (LTC) camp.

Has anyone been to this course? I am looking at joining the Army so I have an idea what it will be like, but if anyone here went through it and could post some reflections of their time spent there I would really appreciate it. Was it challenging in a good way or was it a hell on earth type of scenario?

Thanks

Didn't that used to be called "Basic Camp"? So I guess they changed the name without my knowing or approval. Thanks for joining the forum Emerson and thanks for making a legit first post. Let's see if I can help you out. First of all, I don't believe we have anyone on this board that has attended LTC. However, we do have several NALC, Academy, Basic, and I think one USMC PLC grad. So with our combined powers we will form a giant Autobot capable of answering any and all queries.

If you haven't checked it out yet, here is the offical LTC site:

http://www.armyrotc.com/leaderstrainingcourse/information_2.html

It's more of a recruitment site than anything, so you probably won't obtain any useful information from it. Other than the generic "Army is great, it paid for my college, and I got to meet new friends! Yayyy!"

Here's the 2002 LEADER’S TRAINING COURSE: CADET INFORMATION Cadet Command Circular that provides most of the info you need before attending. You should receive a new copy of this before next Summer. It's in MS Word format by the way:

http://www.rotc.monroe.army.mil/training/ops-standards_div/ltc/CC_CIR_145-05-2.doc

You can probably find some better information from the Eastern Region Command's website. They've got a few photos and other interesting tidbits that you might want to read:

http://www.usaac.army.mil/cc/east/LTC/

Sorry I couldn't provide any personal experiences, because I'm sure that's what your looking for. My guess is that it's very similar to NALC. And if it is, you shouldn't have any problems. Don't be worried about not knowing too much about how the Army or small units operate, they'll teach all that to you when you get there. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Welcome to the family, Mother Green is happy to have you.

You know Emerson, we get a lot of your type in here. Af types going Army. Hell I was one. We should devote an entire forum room to that subject.

You wont get any real training as a Cadet that will push you, unless your that 300 pound kid who had to get BDU's special ordered. LTC will teach ya alot of the good stuff you'll need in Cadetville, like uniform wear, rank, D&C, easy field problems, and some physical training. I say go for it.

*For people getting into the Army
For the love of God, join the Army because it's what you want to do, not because you had fun hanging out with your ROTC buddies in college. Or your ranger club butt buddies

I went to LTC this summer, and it was actually much more involved that you would think. There are many different things that you do, including getting chewed out by DSs. But its all good anyways, as long as you don't screw up they won't mess with you.
Other than that though its interesting. you get to go out to do some brm and a us weapons day, in which you fire an m240, 249, and 203, you also get to see an MK19 and AT4 fired, so its kinda cool. There is also a day where you get to go out and fire the M9. There are six days at the end where you are totaly out in the field, there you do obs courses, water training (not survival but boating), paintball, a road march, e&e and some other things.
All of these things were fun, but the best thing that we did was night infiltration, that is where you do low crawl, high crawl around obsticals, through the sand and water, while m60s fire over your head and c4 goes off in little bunkers around you, what a rush.
Everything other than that though really sucked, its a whole lot of garrison ops with a bunch of pussies who cant handle it most of the time. You also do some other little things like flrc and the like so. There are people who actually drop out of it even though it is only 28 days. But i would definitely suggest doing it, you learn a lot more there than you do in your first 2 years of ROTC.

i went to basic camp the summer of 2001. it wasnt to bad, you got yelled at by the Drills everyonce in a while but other than that not to bad. you got to experience a lot of different aspects of the army, even if only for a second. afterwards some people went into ROTC, others decided it wasnt for them and left, you get a broad mix of people in there who havent really decided if they want to do it or not. overall it was a good experience for learning the very basics of the army

Hey Emerson, I also attended LTC over the summer at Ft.Knox (A.Co 146 2PL 3 squad.) Garrison time sucked but the overall training experience were awesome. Some of the things mentioned before such as weapon familiarization, obstacle course, FLRC, D and C, Land Nav, BRM, and many other fun courses. I've learned to be a better team player and a leader. You'll definitely enjoy the experience. Try to get the first regiment if you can. It's not like NALC where you'll see squared-away cadets (ex-rangers, CIB,and SF). Everyone will be in the same boat as you. If you need more questions on LTC just let me know.

Emerson,

I also attended LTC last summer (Also Alpha 1-46). It's a total joke. It was kind of fun in a summer camp way, but don't go expecting to learn anything really useful. Most of the stuff you will learn at LTC is in your battalion's cadet handbook and you can probably teach it to yourself in a much more efficient way. You'll fire the M-16, M-9, M240B, M249, and M203. You'll also get to see a claymore detonation and watch a MK-19 and AT-4 livefire. Don't expect to have time to enjoy the weapons you fire as there are 100's of cadets to get through in limited periods of time. When I fired the M240 the instructor was telling cadets to hold down the trigger and fire the entire belt of approximately 50 rounds in one burst, instead of actually aiming the rounds at any of the pop-ups on the range. Other than the weapons, the only really fun thing is the field time. You'll get real used to tick checks. If you study up on land nav before you go you will be a standout in your squad. You will do some very limited PT while you are there. Unless you are horribly out of shape, there will be no challenge at all for you. The PT tests are very fairly graded. I lost maybe 4 push-ups on form, significantly less than I'm used to being penalized at ROTC functions (Ranger Challenge, Battalion PT). I have to say the funniest thing that I have ever seen was a male crying on the phone to his parents about how difficult it was there. You'll get sick of the other peoples' whining really quick. Just drive on, ignore it, and shine and you'll do very well in the OML and maybe get an award out of it...

Good Luck,

Cdt1LT Jonathan Leiter

PS: Take a flashlight, you'll find yourself doing yellow cards and blue cards after dark, sometimes in the bathroom stalls...

CDT LEE...your logic about the regiments are wrong...where is your intel coming from that you think early LDAC regiments have more highspeed cadets than late regs?

Common misconception, not sure where that started, but it's just a rumor. We've talked that subject into the ground, so move on soldier.
