if you get to be a STO (squad tactical officer)you babysit basic course cadets going into their MSIII year who never completed all their I and II classes, or you might be on a committee, either way, not too fun, I hated dealing with most of the idiots that went there

Snowbirding is arriving at your duty station before you're supposed to be there, and getting stuck with whatever JAFO duties they have. Kinda like just being a bitch for a while until you need to sign in... I think it most often happens at OBC or similar schools, where it's not like you can start a job early, you just have to wait for your class to start. But it's a way to actually start getting paid without really doing anything.

On the other hand, Blackbirding is just the opposite... staying at your duty station for a while without leaving... so, say, if you went to OBC and didn't leave until a month after your class... if you're getting paid and just getting coffee or doing funeral detail, that's blackbirding. Doesn't happen nearly as often since they usually know where you're going and just want to send you there, but it happens often enough to have a name for it, I guess...

From what I heard is that you have to be on drill status for at least 6 months before you can put in for a transfer to AD, and that has to be signed off by your CO.

As long as the CO signs off on it, the success rate is for the most part high. OUr school got briefed about this a few weeks ago.

Supposedly, it's like this.....

Just because there was a slew of Cadets that were assigned to Reserve Component doesn't mean that AD isn't short on junior officers. The problem is that the number of AD officers per year is regulated by congress. For this past year's mission set, there were 4400 or so cadets to be comissioned. Congress regulates 2900 of those to go to AD. So, no more that 2900 was assigned AD even though more than that asked for AD. That is why some got Reserve Component, when they asked for, or their contract specified that they would be AD.

Now, that doesn't mean that the Reserve Component is not short on officers, because they are.

At least that is what a LTC (not our PMS or any PMS) told us. I didn't do any research to check that, but that is what I heard.

I feel a duty to back up Associate289. The Accessions board, while they do the best they can, have screwed with A LOT of good people. Even w/ my PMS on the Accessions board, my buddy here at school who also got top 1/3, RECONDO, etc got QM (which wasn't even on his list) simply because he was good and QM needed good officers.
They don't simply give good people exactly what they want, so if someone gets screwed and gets Reserves or Combat Service Support (not that I don't appreciate everything they do, but some people don't want that life) don't count it against them. They could have done everything right and had to bend over and take it from "they system."
