A 20-year-old West Bend man is cooling his heels in the Washington County jail today after an explosive outburst which included throwing a full soda can against the wall in the Mid-Moraine Municipal Court held in the city on Wednesday.
"He swore at the city attorney and was yelling obscenities," said Sgt. Dave Rettler, a spokesman for the West Bend Police Department.
Rettler said Joshua Handel was making an appearance in court on a "muffler violation" citation he received when the outburst began.
"He said police were harassing him," Rettler said. Handel has numerous criminal misdemeanor and traffic convictions, according to state court records, which include excessive speeding and operating after revocation.
Handel then allegedly began yelling obscenities directing a number of them to assistant city attorney Elizabeth Krueger, Rettler said, who serves as the city's prosecutor in these cases.
He then threw a soda can against the wall of the courtroom, which promptly earned him an escort to jail. The outburst will also earn him two additional criminal charges, Rettler said, disorderly conduct and bail jumping. The bail jumping charge was levied because a condition of his probation from his last conviction was that he "stay out of trouble."
Handel will appear in another courtroom this one in Washington County Circuit Court later today.
